Clinical Nutrition


Programs offered:

In alignment with the guidelines of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions, the Department is undertaking a comprehensive restructuring of its academic programs. The existing Clinical Nutrition program has been redesigned as Nutrition and Dietetics, ensuring adherence to national academic and professional standards.

Starting from the academic year 2026, In alignment with the standards prescribed by the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions, the Department of Clinical Nutrition started offering both the undergraduate and post graduate programs as prescribed by the NCAHP. The curriculum is aligned with national regulatory frameworks, focusing on enhancing employability by equipping students with essential professional skills, clinical competencies, and ethical practices.

Structured internships and community-oriented extension activities are an integral part of the Bachelor and Master’s programs.


The programs currently offered by the department are

  • Bachelor’s (Hons) in Nutrition and Dietetics [Four Year Eight Semesters, Inclusive of Internship]
  • Masters of Nutrition and Dietetics [ Four semesters inclusive of three months internship]
  • PhD

The UG and PG curriculum integrates hands-on research experience through project work, dissertations, and participation in ongoing clinical and community-based studies, fostering critical thinking and analytical skills.

Academics:

  • To meet the demands of a professional career in dietetics, a Postgraduate Diploma course in Clinical Nutrition was introduced in 1997. Subsequently, in 2007, a comprehensive 2-year Postgraduate program was launched to train and equip graduates in the more specialized areas of diet therapy within a hospital setting. The department was further enriched by the introduction of the Ph.D. program in 2009. The program has produced more than 12 and continues its journey to shape many more in the future.
  • The Year of 2015 witnessed a landmark development of the department with the Introduction of B. Sc Clinical Nutrition (CBCS), the first ever of its kind in a Medical University, where the clinical hands-on training starts in the second year of the program, the unique component of the program.
  • This programme aims to develop the skills and core competencies relating to Nutrition and its application in the health care and hospitality sectors. The curriculum was designed not only to enhance students’ employability/career opportunities but also to transform the young minds into citizens with a strong social responsibility, with entrepreneurial skills as well. To cater to the changing trends, internships and extension activities as part of outreach programs have also been incorporated into the curriculum

Training Provided:

In addition to its dynamic academic programs, the department also offers observerships,internships for students from other colleges, aspiring to learn clinical nutrition for period of 15 days, one month and six months as per their request. During the internship the students are sensitised on nutritional risk screening, hands on nutritional assessment, they get to observe faculty performing the dietary counselling for the in patients and out patients and an exposure to individualised menu planning.
